Summer of Stillness: A Faith-Filled Invitation to Rest and Renewal
As the sun stretches long into the evening and the warmth of summer wraps gently around us, we’re reminded that this season offers more than just heat—it offers an invitation to stillness.
In a world that glorifies hustle, productivity, and doing more, rest feels radical. Yet it is one of the most sacred rhythms God gave us. That’s why we’re so excited to invite you to our “Summer of Stillness” event—an afternoon set aside to breathe deeply, reflect quietly, and embrace the peace that comes from intentional rest.
Why Rest Matters (And What Scripture Says About It)
Rest isn’t optional—it’s holy. From the very beginning, we see rest woven into creation:
“By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work.” – Genesis 2:2
If God, in all His omnipotence, chose to rest, how much more do we—fragile, feeling, finite humans—need to pause?
Yet so many of us live under the burden of “doing it all.” We say yes when we need to say no. We keep pushing when our souls are pleading for quiet.
But Jesus offers something different:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
And in the stillness, we’re reminded of God’s sovereignty. He doesn’t just permit rest—He commands it:
“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
This verse is more than just a gentle suggestion. It’s a call to surrender. A reminder that in the silence and slowness, God is still at work. We don’t have to keep everything together—He already does.
The Magic of Rest in the Brain
What if rest wasn’t just good for your soul—but also vital for your brain?
Our bodies are wonderfully made, and our brains are no exception. When we rest—truly rest—something miraculous happens inside of us. God designed our brains with built-in systems for healing and peace.
Our therapist often reminds us that the same God who crafted galaxies also gave us a brain that flourishes when we slow down:
🌞 Serotonin lifts when we enjoy sunlight, pleasant company, or a glass of lemonade.
🌱 Dopamine rises when we do something satisfying—even potting a lavender plant.
💛 Oxytocin, the bonding hormone, increases through nurturing connection and safe environments.
😌 Cortisol, our stress hormone, decreases when we stop rushing and start breathing.
These aren’t just random chemical reactions. They’re the fingerprints of a Creator who knew we’d need rhythms of recovery. Rest isn’t weakness—it’s wise design. And understanding how our brain responds helps us steward our bodies and emotions with compassion.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” – Psalm 139:14
This is where your counselor’s magic truly shines: She helps translate the science of the mind into language the soul understands.
What Rest Looks Like for Women Today
As women, especially those navigating roles as nurturers, leaders, caretakers, and professionals, we often put ourselves last. But rest is not selfish—it’s stewardship. Taking time to rest:
Renews our energy so we can serve others better.
Refreshes our minds so we can hear God more clearly.
Reconnects us to purpose so we don’t confuse busyness with meaning.
God calls us not just to work, but to abide. And sometimes, that means pouring a glass of lemonade, planting something beautiful, and sitting still long enough to hear the whisper of the Holy Spirit.
You were never meant to run on empty.
Let this be your reminder: stillness is sacred, and you don’t have to earn rest—it’s already yours in Christ.
